Words Matter: Two Approaches to Bridging Divisions on Controversial Issues, 12/6

Thursday, December 6, 2018
12:00 – 1:30 p.m.

Interfaith Action of Greater Saint Paul
1671 Summit Ave, St. Paul, MN 55105

In our increasingly polarized and angry country many people are finding it hard to have a civil conversation with people with whom they disagree on controversial issues. As a result, people of differing perspectives on controversial issues are avoiding talking with one another. This avoidance means people do not really know the people with whom they strongly disagree. Therefore, exaggerated stereotypes replace real relationships. The two approaches you will learn about at this forum, Respectful Conversations and Better Angels, are two ways to help overcome the growing divisions in our country.
Minnesota Council of Churches’ Respectful Conversations have involved over 5,000 Minnesotans in hundreds of conversations on polarizing topics, helping congregations and other organizations to radiate peace in their communities. Recent conversations have addressed post-election tensions and the Enbridge Line 3 replacement. Rev. Jerad Morey, MCC’s program and communications director, has a background in conflict resolution and co-founded Respectful Conversations. Rev. Arthur Murray of Bloomington’s Transfiguration Lutheran Church helped organize a series of Respectful Conversations on divisive topics concerning that city’s residents that were hosted in different faith communities.

Prof. William Doherty of the University of Minnesota is co-founder and a senior fellow on the staff of Better Angels. Better Angels was founded in 2016. Its mission statement says, “Polarization is tearing America apart. Through workshops, debates, and trainings, Better Angels is bringing liberals and conservatives together into a working alliance – building new ways to talk to one another, participate together in public life, and influence the direction of the nation.”

This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments provided.

Mondays, November 26 and
December 3, 10, and 17, 2018
10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

Lectio Divina or Sacred Reading is the slow, repetitive reading of a sacred text that leads one to the ultimate step of resting in God. It is not Scripture study, nor is it spiritual reading. It is an invitation to take a “long, loving look at Scripture,” says spiritual director Teresa Blythe.
“It is a time for falling in love with the Word and experiencing the goodness of God.”
This four-step process for being with Scripture in a prayerful manner includes: Reading (Lectio); Meditating (Meditatio); Praying (Oratio); and Contemplating (Contemplatio). Using texts for Advent, you will experience this ancient prayer form in a group setting, though it is easily adapted to individual practice and can be incorporated into your prayer life.

Cost: Free. RSVP to 651-696-2788 or info@wisdomwayscenter.org Facilitator

Wounds and Words: Body, Race and Being, 9/17

6:30-8:30 p.m.
Monday, September 17, 2018
Carondelet Center

Our bodies are us. Race, sex and gender, sexuality, and culture make each human individual, particular, different. Our bodies make us visible to some and invisible to others. Our bodies make us insiders and outsiders, citizens and immigrants, privileged and profiled, straight and queer. Beginning with our bodies, the Hedgerow Seminar aims to translate wounds into theological reflection and suffering into the compassionate practice of solidarity.

Course at Wisdom Ways

Reading and reflecting with womanist theologian M. Shawn Copeland, we will ask how we can become the raced, gendered, sexed, enculturated body of Christ in our world that Jesus was in his. Alongside Copeland’s work, we will read feminist theologians Rebecca Parker and Rita Nakashima Brock.

The course will include a variety of guest instructors that will guide our reading and reflections.

Together, we embrace our challenge: embodying new ways to cultivate communion in our world and be an inclusive body of Christ.
