Praying the Advent Names of God

Join artist Ansgar Holmberg and prayer poet Joan Mitchell to reflect and meditate on the Advent names of God. A blend of words and images will invite us to transform the traditional O Antiphons from the Advent Liturgy of the Hours into the context of evolutionary cosmology, opening new space for us to anticipate Jesus’ birth in our busy lives and our planet in peril.
The practice of praising God throughout the day reaches back to Israel’s temple with dawn and dusk the most important times for prayer. Vespers, the evening prayer, concludes with the Magnificat, the prayer Mary proclaims after she says yes to becoming the Mother of God. Each dusk from December 17 to 23, an O Antiphon precedes the Magnificat, drawing on the scriptures of Israel to invite the long promised and awaited messiah to come. Use what we pray together to shape your own or your family’s meditations, as we celebrate the incarnation of God as one of us in Jesus.
